Iron deficiency anaemia is a condition where the body does not have enough red blood cells. Iron deficiency anaemia is typically treated with dietary changes and iron supplements that can be taken in pill form.

However, iron infusion may be recommended if the individual cannot take iron orally, cannot absorb iron adequately through the gut or cannot absorb enough iron due to blood loss. An individual may also require an iron infusion if they need to increase their iron levels quickly in order to avoid medical complications or a blood transfusion.

An iron infusion may take a few hours depending on the individual’s condition. An individual may require several infusions to increase their iron levels to the appropriate level.

If this is the first time you are planning to receive iron infusion at our Medical Centre., the doctor will require consultation before infusion can take place. This is to ensure your medical needs are assessed to reduce any complications.

How does it work? It's easy as 1,2,3

First you will discuss your needs with the GP and make a decision to choose the right type of intervention to address the iron deficiency. This discussion will take place on a day different from the day of carrying out the procedure. In most cases there will be blood tests required to understand your needs.

In some cases there are dietary changes and oral supplements that might assist.

In summary if this is the first time you are seeing the GP, you will

Have your initial consultation
Purchase the iron infusion material
Have the intravenous(IV) infusion administered.

I have already seen a Doctor and have a prescription. Can I get it administered at Raby Medical Centre?

You will still need to see the GP at Raby Medical Centre. This is because the GP who administers the infusion will have to make an assessment of your health conditions and, decide on the suitability and dosage. This is an important step as some individuals have contraindications to intravenous(IV) iron.

After the initial consultation, if the dosage advised by the external GP matches that of the GP at Raby Medical Centre, you are welcome use the existing script. However, the GP at Raby Medical Centre themselves will be able to provide you the script if IV iron is the right course treatment for you.

If you are booking online, there are two appointment types required if you are to receive IV iron.

When can I get it done?

This largely depends on the next availability of the GP and the Nurse. In most cases you will be able to see the GP for the Initial Consultation without delays.

However, the infusion is only carried on certain days of the week. This is currently available on three days per week subject to availability of appointments.

Are there any risks with iron infusion?

Most medications will have some risks associated with them. Some risks are amplified based on the individual's medical history and other conditions.

There is a low risk with all iron treatments given directly into your vein. This is an anaphylactoid reaction. This reaction can cause symptoms such as swelling of the face, mouth and tongue as well as potentially causing breathing difficulty.

The GP will discuss this and other specific risks before proceeding with the infusion.

Do I have to buy the material/devices for the procedure?

Yes. You will be provided a prescription during the first consultation. You will then be required to purchase the required dose. For your convenience, there is a chemist onsite if you choose to purchase it there.

I have already received iron in my veins. Can I repeat?

Yes. The GP will most likely check your blood levels before administering another dose.

How much does it cost?

Your cost will be threefold.

Consultation - $65* before Medicare rebate of approx $35
Infusion - $150* before Medicare rebate of approx $75
Material - Approx $45 if you have Medicare and $170 if no Medicare

* If you do not have a valid Medicare card, you will not receive Medicare rebate. However, you can still received the consultation/infusion as a private patient, paying the full price.
